Expansion of global presence by 14 metro markets

In 2023, DE-CIX expanded its global presence by 14 metro markets to over 50 locations from North America to Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

The new locations included a total of five in Northern Europe (two in Denmark, two in Norway and one in Finland), one in India, two in Africa and one in Jordan (the last three in the “DE-CIX-as-a-Service” franchise model).

In addition, two DE-CIX locations were opened in Mexico. For the first time, three Cloud Exchanges were added to the DE-CIX business model in 2023. These were taken into operation in Tokyo, Osaka and Seattle.

Demand for DE-CIX services for enterprises was particularly strong in the past financial year. The number of cloud connections increased by 50 % compared to the previous year. At the end of the financial year, customers had booked almost 4 terabits of capacity to exchange data with their respective clouds.

The expansion of the global DE-CIX backbone network from Seattle to Tokyo allows enterprises and organisations to use DE-CIX’s global interconnection infrastructure and the corresponding cloud and interconnection services.

DE-CIX in Germany and Europe: Strong growth and expansion into Northern Europe

A total of around 1,800 networks with more than 86 terabits of customer capacity are connected to DE-CIX in Germany. The ecosystem is spread across six Internet Exchanges in Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, Dusseldorf, Leipzig and the Ruhr region (Ruhr-CIX powered by DE-CIX). The interconnection requirements of companies are also driving growth in Germany. The number of cloud connections here also increased by more than 50 % in 2023.

Around 40 exabytes of data were exchanged at DE-CIX Frankfurt, the largest Internet Exchange in Europe and one of the largest in the world, with this entailing around a quarter more in 2023 than in 2022. DE-CIX in Frankfurt also introduced the latest generation of 100G LR-1 optical transceivers and migrated more than 1,000 of its customers’ access ports to the latest SR14s FP5-based routers from Nokia. The  migration was necessary to meet the high demand for 100GE and 400GE access ports.

With a total of almost 500 connected networks and an infrastructure distributed across 13 data centres, the DE-CIX Internet Exchanges in Madrid, Barcelona, Marseille, Lisbon and Palermo form the largest neutral interconnection ecosystem in Southern Europe. The connected customer capacity in the region increased by 31 % to 12 terabits. Compared to 2022, DE-CIX Madrid increased data throughput by 44 % to 1.5 Tbit/s at peak times. This was no different in Marseille, where peak traffic reached around 350 Gbit/s (an increase of 35 % compared to the previous year).

In 2023, DE-CIX expanded into Northern Europe and took the Internet and Cloud Exchanges in Oslo and Kristiansand (Norway), Esbjerg and Copenhagen (Denmark) and Helsinki (Finland) into operation. These are directly connected to DE-CIX Hamburg, the most important IX in northern Germany.

DE-CIX in North and Central America: New locations shape the 2023 financial year

DE-CIX North America operates the largest neutral interconnection ecosystem on the continent, with its five Internet Exchanges in New York, Dallas, Chicago, Phoenix and Richmond, as well as the dedicated Cloud Exchange in Seattle, which was established in 2023.

The number of connected networks in the North American region enjoyed double-digit growth to reach a total of 500, while connected customer capacity increased by 27 % to almost 25 terabits.

At DE-CIX New York, the largest neutral IX in the Northeast of the USA, peak traffic grew by 22 % to 1.6 Tbit/s. With 280 connected networks, the capacity at DE-CIX New York increased by 16 % to 14 terabits. This location celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2024.

The trend at DE-CIX Dallas was no different: data throughput at peak times rose by 43 % to 897 Gigabits per second (Gbit/s). With 150 networks at DE-CIX Dallas, capacity increased by 33 % to over 7 terabits. At DE-CIX Chicago, the connected customer capacity grew by 55 % to 2.3 terabits. In addition, the number of connected networks increased by 50 % to a total of 48 at the end of the year.
